چکیده

We study the effect of the chiral phase transition on pion production in hot hadronic matter. The phase of restored chiral symmetry is characterized by the appearance of the scalar σ-meson as a chiral partner of the pion as well as by the degeneracy of the vector and axial-vector mesons. We find rapid thermal and chemical equilibration of these degrees of freedom in the symmetric phase. Provided that the chiral transition temperature is not considerably high, the presence of a chirally symmetric phase will result in ∼ 1.6 times more thermal pions in the final state. O ct 1 99 4 SUNY - NTG - 94 - 54 October 1994 WHERE THE NUCLEAR PIONS ARE

Three recent experiments, which looked at pionic effects in nuclei have concluded that there are no excess pions. This puts into serious question the conventional meson-exchange picture of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Based on arguments of partial restoration of chiral symmetry with density we propose a resolution to this problem.

Chiral Symmetry in Matter *

Soft-pion theorems are used to show how chiral symmetry constrains the contributions of low-momentum pions to the quark condensate, the pion decay constant and hadron masses, all of which have been proposed as signals of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in matter. These have contributions of order T 2 for a pion gas or of order mπ for cold nuclear matter, which have different coefficients...

Density Effect on Hadronization of a Quark Plasma

The hadronization cross section in a quark plasma at finite temperature and density is calculated in the framework of Nambu–Jona-lasinio model with explicit chiral symmetry breaking. In apposition to the familiar temperature effect, the quark plasma at high density begins to hadronize suddenly. It leads to a sudden and strong increase of final state pions in relativistic heavy ion collisions wh...

Evidence for partial chiral symmetry restoration from pionic atoms

Extensive data on strong interaction effects in pionic atoms are analyzed with a density-dependent isovector scattering amplitude suggested recently by Weise to result from a density dependence of the pion decay constant. Most of the so-called ‘missing s-wave repulsion’ is removed when adopting this approach, thus indicating a partial chiral symmetry restoration in dense matter. The resulting p...

Lifetime of a Disoriented Chiral Condensate

The lifetime of a disoriented chiral condensate formed within a heat bath of pions is calculated assuming temperatures and densities attainable at present and future heavy-ion colliders. A generalization of the reduction formula to include coherent states allows us to derive a formula for the decay rate. We predict the half-life to be between 4 and 7 fm/c, depending on the assumed pion density....
